Dial-Up Networking
- Double click on the My Computer icon on the desktop
- Double click on Dial-Up Networking
- If Dial-Up Networking is not installed, install it from the Windows 98 CD or disks
- Click once on the WTP icon
- Click on File on the Menu bar
- Click on Properties
- Uncheck the "Use area code and Dialing Properties" box
- Click on the Configure button
- Set the maximum modem speed
- If the modem is 14.4; set it to 19,200
- If it is 28.8, 33.6, or 56; set it to 57,600
- Do not check "Only connect at this speed"
- Click OK
- Click on the Server Types tab
- Type of Dial-Up Server: "PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98"
- Check "Enable software compression"
- Check "TCP/IP"
- Make sure that all of the other boxes are unchecked
- Click on the TCP/IP Settings button
- Click on "Server assigned IP address"
- Click on "Server assigned name server addresses"
- Check "Use IP header compression"
- Click OK and close out of Dial-Up Networking
- Double click on Control Panel in My Computer
- Double click on Modems
- Click on the Properties button
- Set the maximum speed to the same setting that you did in Dial-Up Networking
- Click on the Connection tab
- Click on the Advanced button
- Modem init strings (if needed) will go in the "Extra settings" field
- With some modems you may need to uncheck "Use error control"
- Click OK and close out of Modems
- Double click on Control Panel in My Computer
- Double click on Network
- The three network components that need to be installed:
- Client for Microsoft Networks
- Dial-Up Adapter
- TCP/IP
- Double click on Dial-Up Adapter
- Click on the Bindings tab
- Make sure that TCP/IP is present and checked
- Click OK to return to the Configuration window
- Double click on TCP/IP
- Click on "Obtain an IP address automatically"
- Click on the WINS Configuration tab
- Click on "Disable WINS Resolution"
- Click on the Gateway tab
- Make sure there are no Installed Gateways
- Click on the DNS Configuration tab
- Click on "Disable DNS"
- Click OK, click OK again.
- If any changes were made, you will need to restart the computer for the settings to take effect.
- Double click the My Computer icon on your desktop.
- Double click the Dial Up Networking icon.
- Click once on the OneEighty icon.
- Click File.
- Click Properties.
- Insert the new telephone number in the Telephone Number box.
- Click OK.
- Close the Dial Up Networking window.
- Close the My Computer window.
- Dial into OneEighty.
